2019 Labor Day Classic Scouting Report
Recently we held our 5th Annual Labor Day Classic Tournament at fields across Rhode Island with the championship hosted at the University of Rhode Island. We hosted some very good quality teams with excellent competition in the 16U division and 18U divisions. Based on evaluations provided by college coaches in attendance, our Firecracker Sports staff and other administrators we will be breaking down for you those teams and players who caught the scouts attention during our event.
Ryan McHugh (EagleBrook School, 2023,RHP/3B) pitched 5 innings in the 16U Championship game, getting the win while giving up 1 run, 2 hits and striking out 7. His FB sat 80-83 (T85) comes out loose and runs away from left-handed batters. SL (72-74) has late tilt that falls out of the zone and creates swings and misses. Athletic 6’ 0” build with plenty left in the tank in terms of velocity
Dylan Rego (Bishop Hendricken, 2021, RHP/C) Rego went 2-3 with 2 RBI and 2 R in the Championship game including an opposite field triple in the gap. Right handed hitter with solid load and stays centered until pitcher’s release; good timing. Build is 5’ 10” athletic for his age. Interesting to see how he will develop at the RI powerhouse Bishop Hendricken.
Connor Kennedy (Bishop Hendricken, 2022, P/1B/3B) Kennedy came into the Championship and pitched 2 shutout innings to keep his team in the game. FB was 74-75 (T76), CB 63-65. True ¾ delivery on the mound with a sweeping curve and progressing slider. Can be a little too stiff on the mound; but has good hip to shoulder separation.
Sean Diaz (Providence Career & Technical, 2022, SS/3B) Smooth stroke at the dish. Defensively, picks the ball well with quiet feet. He works through his fielding progression and uses less with the throw. Plus arm with good IQ on defense.
Daniel Janssen (Portsmouth HS, 2020, RHP/OF) Janssen got the ball for the Bay Sox in game 1 of the Classic and went 6 quality innings. RHP with a wiry frame and straight over the top arm action. FB in the low 70’s was effective when low in the zone. Did a good job of mixing holds and looks with runners on base. CB and CH are + pitches for this level but started to flatten out as the game went on. He occasionally drops down to throw off-speed and spots it low. Could be a potential submarine guy
Jared Reminder (Pilgrim HS, 2021, RHP/1B/3B) was a solid defender all tournament long, playable range and glove in CF. Made an outfield assist in the late innings on a runner tagging to 3B. Struggled a bit with off-speed at the plate especially with 2 strikes. Pitched to 2 batters at the end of the game; FB 80-82 with athletic over the top delivery. Only threw 1 CB at 65. Promising college prospect that’s worth following in 2020 HS season.
Connor Freitas (Portsmouth HS, 2021, 1B) Connor had an impressive day in his second game of day 1, going 3-4 with a double. Aggressive at the plate, looking for his pitch early in counts. Shows barrel control and ability to go the other way with pop. Overall a solid, compact stroke. Average speed but took advantage of pitcher’s pattern and took 2 bases.
Kyle Roche (Braintree HS, 2020, RHP/OF) The Franklin Pierce commit went 5 innings on Day 1 against Providence Sports & Leadership, giving up 1 run on 2 hits while striking out 7. The righty has a clean delivery with a high 3/4 arm slot and throws 4 pitches for strikes. 2 seam FB was at 84 while 4 seam worked from 84-86. CB and CH sat at around 72-74 for a good differential. He kept the ball knee high all day. Bulldog mentality on the mound
Jordan Gorham (Braintree HS, 2022, RHP/IF) looked very athletic at SS all game, showing + glove and footwork with an above average arm. His tall frame may move him over to 3B. He flashed a 3.5 second Home to 1st time. Also handles the bat well with hands to the ball approach; collected 2 hits on the day in big situations. Pitched the final 2 innings with a straight 4 seam 85-86 (T88) and a sweeping CB at 78-80. Huge pro potential for this kid
Ryan Sorgi (Braintree HS, 2020. C/IF) Sorgi caught 3 out of the 4 games for Braintree at the tournament. Helped his pitchers on the corners and received the ball well. Didn’t set up location too early and blocked fairly well. Pop time was 2.20-2.25. ++ contact guy at the plate, collected 6 hits in the tournament.
Tucker Erdody (Braintree HS 2020 RHP/IF) There must be something in the water over in Braintree because these kids can play. Tucker started the second game for Braintree. Stocky RHP with a free and easy 80-82 with arm side run and ++ command. CB was 70-73 and CH 72-75. Had consistent command of the zone, but trusted his off-speed in hitters counts
Wilcar Moreno (Mount Pleasant HS, 2020, OF) was the DH for PSL in their first game, hitting a gapper in his first AB. Right handed batter with big power gap to gap. Gets his hands inside the ball nicely. Keeps his head down on the ball with nice extension.
John Guzman (Evolutions High School 2020 3B) Aggressive defensively, attacks ground balls. Squares up nicely and comes through the ball with a strong arm. Pull side hitter at the plate with compact approach
Alex Ramirez (Central HS, 2019, SS) Committed to the University of Rhode Island. Had no problem against the younger pitching in the tournament, collecting 4 hits. Left handed batter with quick hands and a situational approach at the plate. As solid as they come defensively with ++ arm, range, and glovework. High baseball IQ
Jack Feltovic (Hopkins Academy, 2021, 1B/3B/RHP) Straight up approach at the plate with above average power and lift to the ball. Played 1B but showed good range for 3B. Picks the ball well. Threw 1 inning, FB was 77-79 (T80) with solid command
Trey Faulkner (Sabis School, 2020, INF) is very solid defensively with a good arm for SS, but projects more as a 2B than SS at the next level. Closed RH stance at the plate with a short/compact approach. Plus speed on the bases with a 3.6 home to 1st time
Michael Gadja (New Britain HS, 2020, C) Power hitting catcher with a closed off stance. Right handed pull heavy hitter. Big body with a very good arm but relies on it too much, needs to use legs more. 2.07 was best pop time behind the plate
Jayden Cumbo (Plainville HS, 2021, RHP/1B) Heavy straight FB (75-77 T78) with a High ¾ slider (72-74). Average command of both pitches, struggled early but got stronger as the game went on and kept his team in the game. At 1B he moves well for his size with big boy power. Hit a ball off the wall on Day 2 against Braintree.
Owen Kellington (Union 32 HS, 2021, RHP/IF/OF) the UCONN commit was by far the best and most college-ready pitcher in the tournament. Explosive fastball (84-86 T87) with late run to it. Sharp CB (74-75) was his put away pitch. Went on to start 2 days later in the Championship and battled his way to a victory despite diminished velocity/command. Works quickly on the mound with ++ composure exhibited in the 18U championship. Will look to come in and contribute for UCONN in 2022
Adrian Siravo (Gilford NH, 2020, OF/RHP) Siravo is the 2nd UCONN Commit on the Bandits and is a very intriguing pro prospect both as an outfielder and on the mound. Was a catalyst for his team all tournament from the leadoff spot with a pull-happy, aggressive RH swing (Top Exit Velo: 90) Moves very well with long strides and + athleticism. Had 2 appearances out of the bullpen with a heavy 4 seam (89-92 T93), hammer CB (74-78), and playable CH (70-72). Had solid command of all 3 pitches with a long and explosive delivery.
Levi McAllister (St. Mark’s School, 2022, C) One of the best catching prospects we’ve seen all year. Strong, athletic build with excellent tools behind the plate. Quick transfer (2.00 Pop Time) with a very good arm/ good mobility. RH hitter with pull side tendency; engages his lower half well.
Sam Hill (Algonquin Regional HS, 2021, RHP/OF) Sam did it all for the Bandits in CF, at the plate, and on the mound. Threw the first 4 innings of a mercy rule shortened no hitter in the 1st game, collecting 9 K’s along the way. 5’ 8” toned frame with straight 4 Seam FB sitting 80-82 (T83). Heavy SL (72-75) and progressing CH (70-73). Very athletic kid who gets the most out of his body
Andrew Normandin (Mount Royal Academy, 2021, 2B/SS) Solid defensive MIF, projects at 2B in college. Great situational hitting, especially in the championship. Very consistent barrel control and can hit to all fields. Plate discipline is +
Jelbasio Sacaria (Miami Nationwide Academy, 2020, OF) Sacaria is a legitimate pro prospect. 5 tool player displaying gap to gap power from the right side and hits the ball where it’s pitched. ++ hand placement and lower half engagement. Strong arm in the OF; reads ball off the bat well with solid footwork.
Anliel Gonzalez (English HS, 2020, RHP/IF) Smooth delivery with life on his FB (79-82 T84) Struggles to find the zone with all of his pitches including his SL (70-72). Besides that he got a lot of ground balls and swings and misses. Possesses a 6’ 3” frame that projects well at the next level,
John Pellegrino (Chariho HS, 2020, IF) High baseball IQ; very good glove/hands with solid instincts to go with it at SS. Made every play that came his way in the 2 games he played in. Understands the speed of the runner and how much time he has. At the plate he has a closed lefty stance with an opposite field approach. Very patient hitter; fouls pitches off and draws walks
